  2. MINI is reportedly working on an all-new crossover which would slot beneath the Countryman. Auto Express is reporting the model could be launched as early as 2021 and it will ride on an all-new platform which could eventually be shared with BMW 1-Series, 2-Series, X1, and i3. Little else is known about the model but the report claims the crossover will likely measure over four meters (13.1 feet) long which would make it about the same size as the upcoming Volkswagen T-Cross. The crossover is also slated to be offered with an electric powertrain which isn't too surprising as reports have suggested MINI could transition into an electric-only brand. BMW board member Peter Schwarzenbauer declined to confirm rumors of an entry-level crossover but he told the publication "A small urban SUV is definitely a segment that is extremely interesting, but so far we haven’t made any decision on its direction.” Schwarzenbauer went on to say the company wouldn't offer anything larger than the Countryman as a seven-seat crossover "would not fit with MINI's DNA." If the report pans out, the crossover would join MINI's electric hatchback which was recently previewed by a concept at the Frankfurt Motor Show. Photo Gallery View the full article
  3. Mercedes-AMG boss Tobias Moers recently confirmed the CLS 53 will be unveiled at the North American International Auto Show and the executive has revealed new details about the upcoming model. Speaking to Automotive News, Moers said the car will go on sale in the United States by the end of next year and it will have a turbocharged 3.0-liter six-cylinder engine that has an output in the "400s." That's a little vague but the publication believes it will be rated at around 430 hp (320 kW). Unfortunately, that's where the good news ends as Moers confirmed there will no longer be a CLS 63. Instead, the model has been ditched to make room for the AMG GT 4 which will go on sale in America in 2019. While it's sad to see the CLS 63 getting put out to pasture, Moers hinted the company could offer AMG variants of the E-Class Coupe and Convertible. They would be 53 variants and could arrive as early as 2019. The report goes on to suggest the redesigned GLE will likely receive the 53 treatment sometime after the standard model is launched in early 2019. Photo Gallery View the full article

  5. No matter what you think about Jeremy Clarkson, The Grand Tour host definitely has "one or two" opinions about cars and is never afraid to express them out loud. In this video courtesy of LADbible, Clarkson takes a look at a bunch of photographs of real people with real cars, which means real feelings are at stake. Aside from not being a fan of side skirts on old Mercedes C-Class saloons, he also finds plenty to say about a certain license plate number, a weird Fiat, and even the clothes that car owners choose to wear. Unless of course your name is Katie Price (yes, the celebrity formerly known as Jordan), then you pretty much get a pass - as does your pink Urban-tuned Range Rover, apparently. As for cars he did like, there's a classic Mustang worth mentioning, which we'd all be hard pressed to ignore, plus a Mercedes SLR, which Clarkson doesn't actually touch on, mostly because of how the picture was taken. You'll understand once you see it. VIDEO View the full article
  6. Regardless of how good or bad of a driver you are, one factor is always key in determining your next decision on the road, and that's visibility. This guy had none. Coming in from the third lane and cutting across to the first with that large semi in the way was a horrible decision, even if his motivation was to not miss an exit or perhaps to pull into a nearby gas station. The fact remains that if you can't see where you're going, you're opening yourself up to all sorts of risks that might cause you as well as other people harm. As far as we can tell, a total of three cars were damaged, not including the second-generation Opel Astra that caused the accident in the first place. Here's to hoping people weren't seriously injured. Also, it's probably a good thing that the driver of the Astra managed to avoid running in the back of the first vehicle impacted. By maneuvering between the car and the semi, the driver at fault managed to cut down on his speed before the inevitable happened. VIDEO View the full article
  7. Although most of us are still trying to wrap our heads around the insane 2019 Chevrolet Corvette ZR1, Hennessey Performance has announced three upcoming packages for the supercar, one of which promises to deliver 1,200 hp. The entry-level kit, dubbed the HPE850 upgrade, will see the LT5 6.2-liter supercharged V8 engine equipped with a lower pulley upgrade, high flow cylinder heads, upgraded valve springs, intakes and exhaust valves, new air induction system, stainless steel heads, stainless steel midpipes, custom camshafts, and high-flow catalytic converters. With these mechanical upgrades working alongside software tweaks, the upgrade will lift power from 750 hp to 850 hp, resulting in a 0-60 mph (96 km/h) time of roughly 2.6 seconds and a 10.3 second quarter mile at 136 mph. Next in the range will be the HPE1000 package. Utilizing many similar upgrades to the HPE850 package but some add-ons, including a new supercharger and intercooler, the car should reach 60 mph in 2.5 seconds, run the quarter mile in 9.7 seconds at 147 mph and exceed 220 mph, all thanks to 1000 hp and 966 lb-ft of torque. Last but not least will be the HPE1200. Pumping out 1200 hp at 6,400 rpm and 1066 lb-ft of torque, it’ll achieve 0-60 mph in 2.2 seconds, the quarter mile in 9.2 seconds and potentially reach more than 230 mph. No pricing details have been announced but Hennessey says it will offer 2-year, 24,000-mile warranties for the HPE850 and HPE1000 packages and a 1 year, 12-mile warranty for the HPE1200. 9. Claiming that the current GLS is the "S-Class of SUVs" is a bold statement, even for Mercedes-Benz, but there's a good chance its successor will be worthy of the description. Spied in motion for the first time, the GLS replacement is currently in prototype form, but interestingly enough, unlike the one caught by our vigilant spy photographers, this one features a sunroof, and roof rails. Other than that, it remains pretty much the same, from what we can tell from the camo and plastic cladding, but we do expect an entirely new design, similar to the upcoming GLE, with that beautiful Panamericana grille used in the range-topping AMG model(s). Poised to go against the upcoming BMW X7 as well as the Range Rover, the next generation Mercedes-Benz GLS still has a few major problems to deal with: rivaling the Range Rover SVAutobiography and Bentley Bentayga. However, it appears that an even more luxurious version of the SUV is on the table, one that could see the 'Benz' suffix replaced by 'Maybach', but first things first, let's wait for the 'regular' one to arrive in 2019. 12. Law enforcement officials tend to take a different view of the world than the rest of us. Where most of us see the opportunity for a good time, police see the possibility of danger. That's their job. And the same goes, we might surmise, for performance sedans. What civilians may see as a fun mode of daily transportation, the Law might see as a potential patrol car. Like the new Kia Stinger, for example. With four doors and rear-wheel drive, the Stinger has all the makings of a good pursuit vehicle. That point wasn't lost on the Queensland police department down in Australia, which has already adapted the Korean sports sedan just for that purpose. Shared on Facebook by Downshift and brought to our attention by The Drive, this Stinger has apparently been upgraded with checkerboard livery, flashing lights, and (we're sure) all the other equipment that'd turn a “civilian” vehicle into a police cruiser. It looks like just the thing, in short, for Australia's high-speed highways, especially now that the rear-drive, eight-cylinder Holden Commodore and Ford Falcon are things of the past. 13. Three-door SUVs have a long history, despite never being the most popular body style among utilitarian car buyers. The likes of Suzuki, Toyota and of course Jeep, have had a lot of success with them, and more recently, we've seen people take to the three-door Range Rover Evoque rather well - the Coupe, not the Convertible. So while it's unlikely anybody would spend $200,000 on an SUV that's missing its rear doors, a three-door Lamborghini Urus could still have a few takers, as long as they accept the car for what it is and forget about the "Utility Vehicle" part altogether. Now, as you can see, this render by X-Tomi Design is looking to portray the Urus as something even more sporty, and you could argue that it actually works, given the SUV's already sloped roof line. Of course, the likelihood that Lamborghini would ever build this car is somewhere between "fat chance" and "don't hold your breath", although finding out at some point that an Urus owner took his car to a garage and turned it into a real Coupe, wouldn't exactly come as a shock either. 15. John Cena has responded to the lawsuit issued by Ford against him, revealing that he doesn’t have any “ill will” towards Ford and is looking forward to seeing what the judge will decide. At the start of the month, Ford revealed that it was suing the professional wrestler for selling his 2017 Ford GT after just a month of ownership, in direct violation of a contract that he would own the supercar for at least 24 months. While recently speaking with Univision Autos about the whole saga, Cena admitted that it’s unfortunate but doesn’t seem to bothered about potentially having to hand over the profits he made from the sale and up to $75,000 in damages to Ford. “It’s unfortunate that sometimes you get a disagreement and you have to have an impartial party figure it out, I feel one way, Ford feels another way. “I’m a true enthusiast, I don’t have any ill will toward Ford, I’ve been lucky enough in my life to own some iconic Fords. I follow the brand, I love what they’re doing with the Lincoln line but instead of fighting like irresponsible big kids, we’ll let a judge figure it out and I’ll be happy with either way the situation goes. “I’m extremely excited and interested about it, so we’ll see what happens,” Cena said. 16. The Middle East has a very different car culture, one that often includes high-speed drifting on public roads and the ever-popular dune bashing. So how do you combine that with Tesla's Model X without ruining the electric crossover? Why, you take it on a milder sand-surfing adventure, of course, in Dubai's desert, in this case. The video posted online shows the zero-emission crossover having fun in the sand, and even if it's not as extreme as those Qataris jumping over the dunes in their Toyotas, Nissans, and other SUVs, it's not like you see a Tesla Model X being taken out of its comfort zone every day, is it? This film reminds us of yet another Tesla Model X, which was subjected to an off-roading adventure earlier this year, towing a small trailer packed with firewood behind it, and proving that grass and mud aren’t enough to scare it away. We have the weirdest feeling that Teslas will be punished a lot in the future, once Elon Musk's company finally rolls out that electric pickup truck, which looks pretty much ready to tackle some challenging terrains in the teaser posted by the automaker. 22. It certainly hasn’t pleased all truckers but the Tesla Semi does promise to shake up the industry and beverage company Anheuser-Busch is hedging its bets on the truck. In a press release, the company announced that it has placed an order on no less than 40 Tesla Semis as part of a long-term goal to decrease its operational carbon footprint by 30 per cent by 2025. “At Anheuser-Busch, we are constantly seeking new ways to make our supply chain more sustainable, efficient, and innovative. This investment in Tesla semi-trucks helps us achieve these goals while improving road safety and lowering our environmental impact,” senior director of logistics strategy at Anheuser-Busch James Sembrot said. Interestingly, this isn’t the first time Anheuser-Busch has thrown its support behind trucks with autonomous capabilities. In fact, an Otto truck carried over 51,000 cans of Budweiser between Ft. Collins, Colorado and Colorado Springs in 2016. Tesla claims that the Semi will be able to travel 500 miles under highway conditions with a full 80,000 lbs load. It’ll also be capable of accelerating from 0-60 mph (96 km/h) in 20 seconds with a full payload and will hit the 60-mph mark in five seconds without a trailer. PHOTO GALLERY View the full article
  23. Elon Musk’s The Boring Company has just published a map showing the routes it intends to construct below Los Angeles. As The Verge notes, the single longest piece of tunnel will stretch some 40-miles from Sherman Oaks to Long Beach Airport. In between, the tunnels will have stops at LAX, LA Stadium, South LA, the Staples Center, Inglewood, West LA, Santa Monica, and other areas. To say the plan is ambitious would be an understatement. While The Boring Company still needs government approval to build the tunnels, it has singled out a 6.5-mile stretch between Inglewood and West LA which it dubs a ‘proof-of-concept’ tunnel. Here, it intends on rigorously testing all of the systems proposed by Elon Musk. As announced earlier this year, The Boring Company’s network of tunnels will feature elevators that take cars off the street and whisk them underground. There, the cars are placed onto sleds and travel through the tunnels at roughly 150 mph. Numerous bus-like pods would also carry passengers through the tunnel network. VIDEO View the full article
  24. BMW is gearing up to launch a new 8 Series. But as any Bimmerphile could tell you, it won't be the first. The Bavarian automaker produced just such a model between 1989 and 1999, cutting one of the sleekest profiles the industry has ever produced. Just look at this one, for example. It's an 850Ci from 1993, packing a then-newly upgraded 5.4-liter V12 rated at 322 horsepower and 360 lb-ft of torque – placing it second only to the quasi-M 850CSi. This particular example was ordered in Maldives Blue Metallic, and is believed to be the only 850Ci ever made in that color and right-hand drive. That means it was made for countries where they drive on the left-hand side of the road, like in the UK, Japan... or Brunei. In fact this one is said to have been delivered new to the Sultan of Brunei, who once stood as one of the world's preeminent car collectors. Now nearly 15 years later, the car's listed for sale on AutoTrader in the UK (and brought to our attention by our friends at Motor1), with an asking price of £36,995. That's nearly $50k at current exchange rates, or about the price of a new M240i coupe. Given the choice, which would you take between the two? Photo Gallery View the full article
  25. More than sponsors, manufacturers, teams, or even drivers, stock cars are known by their numbers. 43 is among the most famous of them, and it's switching to a new car next season. Since its debut in 1954, Petty Enterprises' No 43 has been worn by Dodges, Plymouths, Pontiacs, Oldsmobiles, and Fords. But next year it will be on the new Chevy Camaro ZL1. The switch coincides with a new deal penned between Richard Petty Motorsports and Richard Childress Racing, whose ECR Engines department builds the Chevy powertrains for NASCAR and the United SportsCar Championship. “This is our next chapter of Petty racing,” said team co-owner Richard Petty. “Chevrolet has been a consistent winner in the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series for a long time and we’re proud to be a part of the GM family again.” Though traditionally sponsored by STP motor oils, this year the No 43 Camaro will be sponsored primarily by Click n' Close mortgages. It'll be driven by Darrel “Bubba” Wallace, Jr, who moves up full-time to the Monster Energy Cup this season after strong showings and race wins in lower-level competition. Though perhaps best known for his long-running partnership with Plymouth, Petty's switch to Chevy for next year is something of a homecoming. Together, Petty teams have won 31 Cup races under GM power, stretching way back to the first Daytona 500 that Lee Petty won in an Oldsmobile in 1959. Photo Gallery View the full article
  26. Between the mechanics, craftsmanship, and design, there's a lot for automotive enthusiasts to love about wristwatches – especially in that rare space where the two overlap. And few overlap quite like this latest. Crafted by Danish watchmakers REC Watches, these Mustang-inspired timepieces are built out of actual Mustangs – ones that have reached the end of their lives as automobiles, we're assured. “Most people would just see a pile of metal, a ghost of a Mustang. We see something completely different – the soul of a car and a story that needs to be told,” says REC Watches co-founder Mygh. “I’m not cutting up Mustangs. I’m bringing Mustangs that are beyond repair back to life as a watch.” Each vehicle from which the materials are sourced has its history carefully retraced and documented on video. One rare Raven Black 1966 model, for example, was discovered in Sweden and turned into a limited run of 250 timepieces. Another was crafted specifically for drift champ Vaughn Gittin, Jr. using the carbon-fiber bodywork from his Mustang RTR drift car. Each features a design borrowed from the classic pony car as well, including dials inspired by the Mustang's dashboard instruments, and a power-reserve meter designed to look like its fuel gauge. Pricing starts at $1,495. Photo Gallery Video View the full article
