  1. Subaru will unveil their 2019 Ascent three-row SUV at the 2017 Los Angeles Auto Show next Tuesday, on November 28. Dubbed the first full three-row SUV from Subaru, according to the Japanese automaker, the Ascent is "family-sized, versatile and capable." In a way, it's also the spiritual successor to the Tribeca. Of course, the best comparison you could make would be with the Ascent Concept, unveiled earlier this year in NY. The concept itself was based on a previous design study, called the Viziv-7, and featured flared fenders and a large bluff grille in front. We're happy to tell you that those flared fenders are definitely there on the final product as well, judging by what we can see in this latest teaser image. Also, the headlights seem a tiny bit smaller than on the concept, but their overall design is similar. If the production model will be the same size as the Ascent Concept, it will measure 198.8 inches (5,049 mm) in length, 78.3 inches (1,989 mm) in width and 72.4 inches (1,839 mm) in height - making it almost as large as a Chevrolet Traverse. 2. Uber has been fined $8.9 million in Colorado for allowing 57 people to drive with the company despite not meeting requirements. During a probe into the ride-hailing company, the Colorado Public Utilities Commission said it discovered 12 drivers with felony convictions, 17 with significant moving-vehicle violations and three drivers with a special license only issued to those with drunk-driving convictions. In a statement issued to Automotive News, commission director Doug Dean said the drivers should never have been permitted to work for Uber. “We have determined that Uber had background check information that should have disqualified these drivers under the law, but they were allowed to drive anyway.” Uber claims that it had made an error in its background check process in Colorado and is working to correct the issue. 3. The Polestar brand may be essentially an offshoot of Volvo, but its vehicles won't be produced along Volvo assembly lines. Instead parent company Geely is building a completely new production center, construction of which has now officially begun. Situated in Chengdu, China, the new Polestar Production Centre is set to open in the middle of next year, tasked initially with fabricating the Polestar 1 – a 600-horsepower hybrid super-coupe. But the facility just be a factory. It'll also have a “customer experience” center like the one Volvo has in Gothenburg, and a test track on which customers will be invited to try out their new hybrid wheels. “Following the successful launch of the new Polestar brand in October, construction of the new Polestar Production Centre is the next step in turning our plans into reality,” said Polestar CEO Thomas Ingenlath. “We are building a Production Centre that is a reflection of our brand. A facility that is modern, progressive, technically advanced and environmentally responsible. The Polestar Production Centre will be an embodiment of the Polestar brand.” Designed by Norwegian architecture firm Snøhetta, the facility is destined to be the most environmentally friendly in China, and one of the greenest in the world. Once production comes online, it'll build as many as 500 vehicles each year, making it a rather low-volume production facility. Photo Gallery View the full article

  7. Volkswagen UK has expanded the Amarok range with the addition of a cheaper manual gearbox option in combination with the 201hp diesel engine. This brings down the entry price of the VW Amarok by over £650 to £25,600 (excluding VAT and other fees). The new base model is available in Trendline trim and selectable all-wheel drive system. The new manual VW Amarok remains rear-driven until the driver decides to engage the front axle at the touch of a button. The manual gearbox also enabled VW to add a low-range option too, which allows the German pickup truck to perform better off-road. The 3.0-liter V6 diesel engine produces 201hp (204PS) between 3,000 and 4,500rpm, as well as a maximum torque of 368lb-ft (500Nm) between 1,250 and 2,750rpm. Fuel economy is a combined 32.5mpg UK while CO2 emissions are rated at 229g/km. The addition of a manual gearbox also made the Amarok a bit quicker off the line, with 0-62mph (100km/h) coming in 8.4 seconds against the 9.1 of the automatic counterpart while top speed is set at 119mph. Volkswagen UK will also add an even cheaper manual Amarok to the range with a 163PS diesel engine early next year. First deliveries of the new manual Amarok V6 are expected in February 2018. 8. The bid daddy of Mercedes has been thoroughly updated for MY2018 with new tech and powertrains but is this enough to fend off challengers in the luxury segment? The German company kept visual changes to a minimum, with redesigned LED lights, a new radiator grille and bumpers being the main differences but the mechanical part of the update is a whole different story. That’s because the new Mercedes S-Class is the company’s first model to feature their all-new straight-six powertrains, both in petrol and in diesel formats. The 3.0-liter petrol engine can be found in the S 450 and S 500 models, producing 367hp and 435hp respectively. As for the 3.0-liter diesel unit, the figures are 286hp/442lb-ft for the S 350d and 340hp/516lb-ft for the S 400d. All models use the 9G-Tronic automatic transmission, bar the V12 models. The adoption of the 48-volt electrical architecture also makes the S-Class compatible with a range of cutting-edge driver assistance features, including a semi-autonomous function. The lovely interior mixes luxury and technology in a very impressive way, featuring a pair of new 12.3-inch digital displays that are housed under the same glass panel while the new steering wheel offers better ergonomics thanks to its touch-sensitive controls. For many the Mercedes S-Class is the best automobile in the world but is this true for the latest model? Let’s find out what Carwow and Mat Watson have to say about it. VIDEO View the full article

  11. Well there you have it! The McLaren 720S is quicker than the Holy Trinity of hypercars, not to mention just about any Bugatti you can think of. We saw the 720S cover a standing 1/4 mile in 9.9 seconds at 141 mph (227 km/h) last month, and since then, a case was made for it being even quicker under the right conditions. Well, thanks to improved weather, this stock 720S took to the ATCO Raceway in New Jersey where it ran the 1/4 mile in just 9.7 seconds at over 147 mph (236 km/h) - and did so multiple times, just in case there were still doubters out there. In order to get the most out of his tires, the owner of this 720S used a set of tire heaters, which as Dragtimes points out, fit perfectly in the supercar's frunk, along with a generator, two jacks and other tools. As impressive as this achievement is, it's a hair less than the Dodge Challenger SRT Demon and its 1/4 mile time of 9.65 seconds at 140 mph (225 km/h). We'd love to see a best 2 out of 3 with these two cars. VIDEO View the full article
  12. There are certain memorable moments in our lives that stick with us forever. Getting engaged would be one of them, for most who've had the privilege. Driving a Formula One racing car would surely be another. This couple got to do both, all at the same time. Our story stars when Matthew Creed, a workshop controller from Kent, England, test-drove a Renault Clio RS at a dealership in Maidstone back in August, and was automatically entered in a contest. The prize: a chance to drive one of Renault's F1 cars. Creed won the competition, earning him two tickets to the Paul Ricard circuit in the South of France for the opportunity. He took his girlfriend Hayley Melen along for the trip, and popped the big question while they were there. That'd be enough to make for a day to remember for both of them, but they also got to learn the circuit – set to host the French Grand Prix next year – in a Formula Renault 2.0 racer before sliding in behind the wheel of the 800-horsepower F1 car, which to our eyes looks like the E20 that the Lotus-Renault team ran back in 2012 (albeit repainted to reflect the team's current livery). Oh, and she said yes, by the way: “The whole day was just perfect from start to finish. Hayley and I have always shared a passion for racing and Renault, and enjoy regular track days together in my Clio R.S. 200,” said Matthew. “She has always been so supportive of my dreams and I knew it was the perfect moment for her to make me the luckiest man in the world, and she agreed to become my wife. It is a moment we will treasure for the rest of our lives.” “Without a doubt it was the best day of my life. I didn’t think that extraordinary things really happened to ordinary people,” added Hayley. “We have both had a soft spot for Renault since we have been together, and alongside our passion for F1, it was just the perfect moment.” Now we can't wait to see what their wedding will be like. 15. Just a couple of days after Tesla shocked the world by unveiling the second-generation Roadster with unprecedented performance figures, Elon Musk has taken to Twitter to indicate this is just the start of what’s to come for the new sports car. In a Tweet published on November 20, the outspoken entrepreneur indicated that a special upgrade package for the new Tesla Roadster could borrow rocket technology and possibly fly short distances. Yes, you read that correctly. Musk said it is “certainly possible” to make the Roadster part supercar-slayer and part flying car. “Just a question of safety. Rocket tech applied to a car opens up revolutionary possibilities,” he added. As always, it’s important to take anything Musk says with a pinch of salt. After all, he is no stranger to expressing his ambitious goals, even though they are often far beyond the realm of what most people consider reasonable. For example, he thinks humans and AI could eventually merge to create AI-human symbiotes. As it stands, the new Tesla Roadster, unveiled in entry-level guise, is already quite bewildering. The automaker claims it will have three electric motors, a 200-kWh battery pack and be capable of accelerating to 60 mph (96 km/h) in just 1.9 seconds, 100 mph (160 km/h) in 4.2 seconds and sprint to over 250 mph (402 km/h).
